Accurate and Repeatable Determination of Water in Crude Oil

High Cut BS&W Monitor with integral mixer

Laboratory technicians involved in crude oil testing will be familiar with the term BS&W. There are several ways that this can be determined using ASTM Standard D96, D4007 or the API Document "Sediment and Water", Chapter 10, Section 2, 'Determination of Water and Sediment in Crude Oil by the Centrifuge Method".

Some other methods available for water in crude oil are ASTM D4377, D4928, IP386.  Field operators and engineers may also be aware of standards that pertain to automatic custody transfer crude oil sampling which are API 8.2 and ISO 3171.

Since BS&W is an important as economic parameter – it actually shows to the customer the amount of crude feedstock which should be accounted into "losses" prior to any processing many operators consider that accurate determination of water content a major concern.

If crude oil contains varying amounts of water, the operators are faced with the task of not only determining the water content but also measuring the volume flow of liquids with varying oil/water mixtures.   Spot sampling is never adequate because it only represents a minute fraction of the total volume of crude and although lab testing has been done according to international standards, the laboratory results are only as good as the representativeness of the sample.

EESIFLO International is involved in the design and fabrication of complete systems to enable representative samples for laboratory testing and representative online determination of flow and water content.  Our systems will enable the end user to be able to correlate laboratory results with online measurements.

This enables them to establish a true baseline for measurement which can be traced back to international standards. Without a true baseline, the operators have no way of determining if their measurements are meaningful.

For more information on our design and manufacturing capabilities please contact us at sales@eesiflo.com

EESIFLO International is a company with over two decades of experience worldwide in the manufacturing, design and installation of complete systems that will accurately report BS&W. Instead of the operator having to turn to multiple vendors , EESIFLO International builds complete systems and takes single source responsibility for a system to determine BS&W online or through internationally approved custody transfer sampling methods.
