A simple answer would be the process
of removing water from sludge. However,This
is not a totally correct answer, since
dewatering does not completely remove
the water from the sludge. The percent
of solids and moisture in relation to
each other after dewatering, is dependent
on the nature of the sludge and the
exact nature of removal.
Therefore, a better definition of dewatering
is; the process of natural, chemical,
or mechanical removal of water from
sludge, thereby reducing it to a damp
solid with the lowest level of moisture
attainable .

How can we benefit from Dewatering?
A good reason would be cost savings and environmental
awareness , Lower Transport and Disposal costs
, Dewatered solids are cheaper and easier to
incinerate Ease of handling with dewatered solids,
Less offensive smells. Reduced volume in landfills
, Reduced leachate production in landfills ,
Lower amount and cost for bulking agents for
composting
What is sludge?
Sludge is a suspension of a solid matter in
a liquid bur there are many other terms that
are used in place of sludge like wastewater
solids and biosolids. The other terms are more
specific to the process that generated them
or to the usage category. Sludge is generic
and can be applied to any solid/liquid by-product
or waste.
How do I know if dewatering is right
for my industry?
Treatability testing is then performed to find
the the optimum sludge removal and dewatering
technique. A site and sludge specific evaluation
process is performed with the objective of developing
the safest, most economical, and environmentally
responsible approach that meets or exceeds the
objectives and expectations of the client. There
are several consultants who are actively involved
in this process/
What are some of the processes for
dewatering?
An example could be the removal of the sludge
to a mix tank or holding tank, the sludge is
pumped across a shaker screen or thru a grinder
to remove or crush any debris. Conditioning
chemicals are added if needed to the mix tank
and then pumped to the dewatering unit. The
dewatered solids go into appropriate containers
and the removed water is disposed in an approved
manner. |
