ROTAMETER
(Variable Area Meters) are named after ROTA, one
of the European inventors of this flow principle
in the beginning of the century. ROTA invented
the rotating float, which is self-guiding and
has less friction in the pipe so that a more precise
measurement is possible. ROTAMETER
offer a very low cost, easy to install solution
to flow measurement. Once considered as only a
water or air flowmeter, ROTAMETER is now world
proven in applications such as industrial gases,
viscous/non conductive chemicals, steam and fuels. |

Brooks® Rotameter
Brooks offers a wide range of glass and metal tube variable area flow meters with a choice of application-specific materials and connections, and accuracy of +/- 2% of full scale (standard) or 1% (optional). Made entirely of PTFE, PFA, and PCTFE, the model F
flow meter is excellent for high-purity applications
or use with corrosive liquids.
Units are available with a standard valve to monitor
and control flow or without a valve to just monitor
flow.
Flow meters are individually tested on a Mass Spectrometer
Leak Detector and certified to a leak integrity rating
of 1 X 10-7 sccs Helium or better.

Rotameters , where they are used on air or gas applications are identified by the glass tube which has a gravity float .
When flow increases the float moves up. The great advantage of the rotameter is that rotameters do not need to be externally powered but can operate and indicate gas flow, air flow or steam flow measurement using the force of the fluid it is measuring .

Because of the simplicity of rotameter designs, they can be manufactured out of low cost materials and mass produced.
They can also be combined with flow regulators so that operators can see the impact on flow when turning a flow control valve for air or gas control.
Unlike a horizontally installed flowmeter , the rotameter must be vertically installed with the fluid going from down to up. |

Several rotameters may be used where a different gas needs to be measured or rotameters with multiple scales installed if the liquid or gas types being measured have varying viscosity or density. |

Some options for rotameters have magnetic floats or some other means whereby they graduation or scale on the tube does not need to be visually noted and in these cases the rotameter can be used for example as a water flow switch , air flow switch or gas flow switch. |
