An
obstruction in a pipe creates vortices on the
downstream side of the obstruction. Temperature
or pressure sensors measure the vortices to gauge
the strength of flow. |

The Model 241 has emerged recently as the proven instrument of choice in geothermal steam applications across the globe. The Model 240 and Model 241 can measure the mass flow rate of any gas or liquid and are ideally suited for saturated or superheated steam. The Model 241 vortex flow meter is available in high-pressure versions capable of mass flow measurement of gases up to 5000 psig. Our Multivariable Technology allows one instrument and one process connection to measure FIVE process parameters at the same time to simultaneously measure mass flow rate, temperature, pressure, volumetric flow rate, and fluid density.

Vortices are created when
a fluid passes around a bluff body as shown below.Vortices
are alternately shed on each side of the body, 180 degrees
out of phase to each other, resulting in an oscillating
pressure gradient. As flow increases the frequency of
vortices increases in proportion to the increased flow
thereby creating a linear relationship.
