Oxygen Flowmeter

Oxygen Flowmeter

These are common to oxygen tanks . The picture shows  a pressure gauge/pressure regulator set and a variable area meter or commonly called a Rotameter which mostly likely has a ball type float. The rotameter is very common in  hospitals and laboratory applications as an air flow meter device and in the case above it is acting as an oxygen flow meter. The rotameter is not limited to certain types of gas but can be pre fabricated for use as a nitrogen flow meter or as a specialty gases .

As for the flow rate, it must normally be read at the centre of the ball. The picture above shows an oxygen regulator used in a healthcare application . The regulator is coupled to the oxygen flow meter and by visual inspection the user is able to see the flow rate by a flow scale marked on the rotameter so the regulator and flow meter go hand in hand. Combining the rotameter and oxygen regulator as a complete set creates a new product called a oxygen flow controller.

Mass Air Flow Meters

Other industries also need air or gas flow controllers. Not only for oxygen flow applications but also for natural gas, compressed air, hydrogen monitoring, land fill gas monitoring, purge meters, biogas flow measurement, chlorine gas and even wastewater aeration.

The control processes can be of multiple types and are normally automated and so it is important to use a device that is relatively accuracte, reliable, easy to install and affordable. This is where the Mass Flow Meter comes into play.  Some of the applications may require a non incendive design specially certified for use with explosive gases (see Hazardous Area Terms) or other types of corrosive gases.

MASS EMISSIONS FUEL GAS METERS

One of the hot topics is a mandate that has been given in the USA. The Environmental Protection Agency ) EPA mandate (40cfr pt. 98) specifies what kind of reporting is necessary from owners and operators on industries who process cause gas emissions. Consulants and contractors specializing in Emission Management Systems as well as end users who are able to design and operate their own systems benefit from the Mass Flow Meter ability to continual report the amount of gas usage and gas emission.

Since there are multiple types of gas, the mass meter manufacturers are required to produce products that are pre-calibrated to a list of gases and also to operate and interface with Emission Management Systems. For example, in the case of anaerobic digestors , a fuel gas is produced and not only the flow rate is of importance but also the total gas produced over a time period. This requires that the flowmeter not only has flow ability but also totalizing functions.
