ROTAMETER AIR FLOW METER

To immediately find reliable Rotameter Flow Meter Manufacturers for sales and service , please go directly to the ROTAMETER section and VARIABLE AREA FLOWMETER section

The Rotameter is actually a variable area  flowmeter . This flow meter device comes in a diverse manner of shapes and sizes for the measurement of liquid, gas and air flow.  Most people will be familiar with the general purpose  rotameters designed for simple air flow and water flow applications. The same low cost rotameter can be used on different air and water applications if a scale is provided to differentiate between the fluids .

ROTAMETER AIR FLOW METER

Simple applications will not require that the wetted parts of the rotameter to be made from special materials of construction. The general industry rotameter flow meter advantage is its value as a general purpose flow indicator. The user has a visual indication of the flow rate and this method does not require any power source for the rotameter to function since it is based on mechanical principles and is a normally a low cost and convenient type of flowmeter to operate and install,  hence its popularity.

ROTAMETERS FOR AIR AND MANUAL FLOW CONTROL

The Air Flow Rotameter must be installed in the upright position . Inside the flow tube is some version of ball or float which which will move up and down according to the air flow rate. Each rotameter is designed with a particular flow scale. In the example above it is cc/min or cubic centimeters per minute.

When selecting an air  rotameter flow meter it is important in the flowmeter selection to chose the model or type which is able to handle the range of air flow rates both mininum and maximum for the flow application.

ROTAMETERS FOR AIR AND MANUAL FLOW CONTROL

Manual flow control can be added to the flowmeter either by the manufacturer or later on . In fig Air Meter 1.0 a stainless steel control block is used with manual air control valve which is normally a high precision needle valve.

The precision air valves are designed to control the opening of the orifice in a gradual manner i.e. it requires multiple turns of the air control knob to increase the flow rate at the outlet. This is very important when interfacing with expensive or sensitive equipment that cannot withstand a sudden burst of flow pressure. The rotameter flow meter in these applications is also small enough and easy enough to be panel mounted.

ROTAMETER FLOW SCALE MIN/MAX

ROTAMETER FLOW SCALE MIN/MAX

If you take a look at the graduations on the above example, there are numbers up to 200.  This rotameter has been designed to work from 0-200 cc/min . Notice that the graduations are slightly further apart in the lower end 0-50 and 0-100.

This means that greater resolution can be seen in these lower flow rates. Rotameter manufacturers must be consulted or their literature studied carefully when selecting a Rotameter Type.
